Do I need malaria pills in Manaus, Brazil?
Question by Hello: Do I need malaria pills in Manaus, Brazil?
I’m camping out in the jungle for a week-yay. Just wondering if I need to take pills for malaria? I keep hearing conflicting info. Any tips about anything in Manaus in general is appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Most of the anti-malarials, including doxycycline and chloroquine, are available over-the-counter in Central and South America. You should be able to find what you need in the major cities. They may not be available in the pharmacies in smaller towns. From what I have found through my searches, the price will be much cheaper than what you would pay in Europe or the US.
You should take it.

Yes. Doxycycline is extremely cheap in the US and chloroquine is NOT effective there so get your pills before you leave on your trip. You have to start them before you travel to the area with malaria so this will be more practical than trying to get them there.
