I will be going to Brazil for 2 weeks and we plan to stay on Ilha Grande in Angra dos Reis any recommendation?
Question by born2skiutah: I will be going to Brazil for 2 weeks and we plan to stay on Ilha Grande in Angra dos Reis any recommendation?
It will be just my wife and I we are in a our mid 20′s and love the outdoors especially kayaking and hiking. Price isn’t super important although we would like something that is a good value ie close to the beach and nice place. Also I speak Portuguese so english is not a must.

you should look online and I’m sure you will find some Pousadas that will work… if you get bored there come up to Rio…
its just a 2 hour bus ride from Angra
bring a fleece jacket and some warmer clothes, lately here its been in the 70′s and when it rains (like yesterday) it gets chilly..
Ilha and Angra are beautiful, I’m sure you’ll have a great time.

Some of my Brazilian friends rave about Ilha Grande and Angra. I’ve seen pictures and both look amazing. The hills, scenery, water falls, hiking, beaches and more. It sounds like your interests are a good match for these places.
Check out http://www.tripadvisor.com and http://www.virtualtourist.com. Both of these two websites are good starting points.

Bom Dia
I just got back from Brasil about a month ago, and stayed on Ilha Grande for about 2 weeks. It so happened that the weekend available for my travel there, was a long holiday weekend there in Brasil. We didn’t make reservations ahead of time (which was a mistake). We arrived into Rio de Janeiro, and stayed several days in Ipanema / Arpador at the Atlantis Copacabana Hotel (about R$ 200 per night) very clean, friendly staff, and a great breakfast. Walking distance to Ipanema or Copacabana. More places here to rent, and cheaper than Angra dos Reis would be. We then left just before 5am with a pre-schuled appointment with our taxi guy [Pedro Fiel Filho 21-9991-9552] that we were using days before for my photo needs early in the mornings, and to drive us to Mangaratiba. Here you can take the morning boat R$ 14 for the 2 of us… and it saves you an extra hour drive to Angra, and will get you to Ilha Grande quicker too. Taxi was about R$ 140.
The other option was an early Bus, from the main station in Downtown (taxi fee there) then 2hr ride to Angra dos Reis, which would miss the first boat to Ilha Grande anyway.
As far as places on Ilha Grande, the first place we stayed at was nice, about a block away from the main pier/dock no ocean view, but relatively clean, and was about R$ 80 per night, with a decent breakfast. I don’t know how to describe it, as there was a clothing store in front, and pousadas behind… I think if you ask the dock porters, for Elannes Pousadas, they may know where it is,,, or not.. Most of the places are on dirt roads. If I find their card, i’ll update this post. This was for a Thursday night only, as The whole weekend was booked, and double the price, starting on Friday. So we needed to find another location, before the next morning arrivals…. This left us an option of Camping in a tent (R$ 20 per night) rain in the forecast (it did, and heavily for 2-days)
or getting lucky and walking around for the next 4 hours, hitting up on the whole town for pousadas that may have a vacancy… well, we did find one, that was in the back of a house… past the police station, next to the school playground, on the right side… about R$ 60 per night, no breakfast… not too bad, and actually closer to where I went to take early morning photos, and hike. Have a look at the link/photo below… best way to describe where it was…
If your into an ocean front place, I would suggest the place right in front of the pier/dock of Vila do Abrãao when you arrive. Look for the big flag up top. The rentals are up top… They also give a better exchange rate, if your converting U$ to R$ . Have a look at the link below, with a listing of beach front places… most have websites, so a search via google will get you started. It’s a small community, and as you would expect, almost everyone knows each other. Best to get a reservation in advance
Ilha Grande is fantastic, you’ll love the day boat tours they offer, that will visit 4 or 5 of the most popular beaches, where you can snorkel around. Rentals for fins and masks are available, unless you need one for prescription glasses, then bring your own.
Also, Island Travel (link below), the husband and wife have a speed shuttle that will get you back to Rio de Janeiro… on a fast boat, and then a van ride to the airport, all for one flat fee of R$ 130 for 2. This was a deal. They may have something Going to Ihla Grande too. I just saw that it is available for the high season only :-/ If you stop buy say Hi from Will and Kell, at their internet / Travel Store in front of the main pier.
Hope this helps a little… i’ll definitely be back there again.
Safe Travels my friend,
Will and Kell
