I am a fit female and did it about six years ago. It is wonderful! Many climb the Inca trail 2-4 day journey, however, doing it alone could be difficult and risky. There are buses which go up to Aguas Calientes and indeed the train is a terrific experience. However, the train is not running these days, I understand.

The weather in June can get very very cold at night as it is Winter there and one needs to take health and safety precautions. The altitude 2,430 meters (8,000 feet) may affect the respiratory system. Many people experience terrible headaches, loss of body stability and vomitting. It is a good idea to spend some days in El Cuzco acclimatising the body to the altitude and getting the latest information of the actual conditions. There one can find tourists who will climb to Machu Pichu everyday.

Before leaving home, get all the information possible by getting tour books on what to bring and ask friends who have done this journey.

Learning basic Spanish is a must.
