What is the best tour agency to use for a one day tour to Machu Picchu ?
Question by Erica Ashley: What is the best tour agency to use for a one day tour to Machu Picchu ?
I am staying at the Libertador in Cusco. Should I book through the hotel or can someone recommend an agency that I should use ? Are the prices the same if I were to book through the hotel vs. going through someone on the street ? What is the safest and best way to do this ? Also, how long is the actual hike through the Inca Trail to get to Machu Picchu ? Thanks….

GAP Adventures is a good company to book with. However, depending on when you are going of course, most of the Inca trail permits are sold out by now probably up until Sept/Oct. You might be able to get on the Lares trek or just take the train up to Machu Picchu.

there are quite a few sites that you can search that will likely show you great hotels at the best prices available. check out the website BookMe and you will be able to compare prices on all the reputable travel sites in just a couple minutes. it’s very convenient and will save you a bunch of time and money. Also, make sure you buy them online… otherwise they charge much higher fees for phone orders. good luck.

We did the four-day trek a couple of years ago through SAS Travel http://www.sastravelperu.com/ – not only did six out of six friends recommend them to us when we asked before we went, but we found them a thoroughly excellent tour operator. Good English-speaking native Quechuan guide who was very passionate about his surroundings.
Price might be slightly higher than average but at least they treat their porters ok…
You can book online or through the SAS Travel shop in the corner of Plaza de Armas.
The hike is four days but realistically that is three full days’ hiking and around two hours very early on the fourth morning to get to MP for sunrise. I would highly recommend doing it this way!
